Debi's Story

How I Met The Lord

I was just four years old when I found Jesus Christ my savior, and it wasn't at church! My mother brought me to church regularly; however, I never really got much out of it. I do remember that the mass was spoken in Latin back then, and that the bells rang during the service sounding like the telephones ringing. Both my parents were Roman Catholic, and that was the only religion to them. Both had experienced rejection by Protestants for their faith. I was to be raised Catholic.

My mother told me about Heaven and Hell. I was very fearful of Hell. I realized what death was, and that if you were bad that you would live there forever. I was afraid of the burning fires, and once even woke up from a bad dream to actually see hundreds of red hands come up through the floor. They were trying to pull me down as I ran to my mothers’ room screaming that the devil was trying to get me.

I was in Salina Kansas when I was four, and there was a very nice teenage girl who lived down the street. My friends and I would go to her house where she helped us to make flower arrangements for our mothers. She told us that she was having a Summer Bible School, and that if I wanted to go we would have to ask our mothers. I asked my mother and she said OK (when my father found out I was not allowed to return). Most of the things the teenage girl said I had already heard except for the golden book. I really wanted to know about this book. If your name were written in this book, you would go to heaven. I really wanted to go to heaven, and this girl said that all you had to do is ask to be written in the book and believe in Jesus Christ as your savior. I prayed and prayed for my name to be written in that book when the girl lead us in prayer to be included in the golden book. I knew that if the Lord wrote my name in that book I would live with Him in Heaven forever when I died. That is how I found the Lord, thanks to a sweet teenage girl in Salina Kansas. He has lived in my heart since that day.

James 1:2-4 "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.  Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
